The Beginner’s Guide to Solo Travel

If the mere thought of travelling solo fills you with fear, fear not, you are not alone!

Solo travelling requires practice in order to build confidence, but in order for that to happen you must take the first step. If you feel ready but don’t know where to start, simply follow the tips below, and you will be well on your way to an unforgettable adventure.

1. Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is the most important preparation that you can do, whether you are a first-timer or seasoned solo traveller. Before leaving home, spend some time researching your destination and reading travel guides. Arm yourself with a clear idea of where you want to go, where the must-see attractions are, and how to get there. You should also be aware of any tourist traps, scams and risky areas to avoid. Proper planning can also prepare you to steer clear of trouble, understand cultural norms, and manage any language-related problems.

2. Check your travel documents

You must have a passport that is valid for the entire duration of your trip. Check also whether you need a visa for any of your destinations, and don’t forget to buy travel insurance.

3. Book your hotel

By booking a hotel in advance, you will be assured of having a safe and comfortable place to stay when you arrive. If you are not satisfied with your booked hotel, you can always look for something better after you arrive. You might consider staying in hostels which are a great choice for solo travelers, as that is where you can meet other travelers and make new friends.

4. Stay connected and safe

Just because you’re travelling solo doesn’t mean you should isolate yourself. Buy a local SIM card or portable Wi-Fi hotspot for internet access so that you can keep in touch with family and friends while on the road. Always let your family or a friend know how to contact you in case of emergency. Keep them updated about your whereabouts and your plans.

5. Be Flexible

While it is important to plan ahead, maintaining a degree of flexibility can turn a good holiday into a truly awesome one. Be open to changing your plans, or adding some unplanned activities and destinations. These acts of spontaneity could well become the highlights of your trip. So do leave room for flexibility in your itinerary.

6. Be ready for new experiences

Solo travel is an opportunity for you to try new things and challenge yourself. Whether it’s skydiving or local handicrafts or eating the local food, don’t be afraid to embrace new experiences.

7. Consider Joining a Tour

One way to enjoy solo travel is to join a small-group tour. Travelling together in a small group with a driver-guide is a great way to meet like-minded travellers and can be a safer option for the first-time solo traveller.

By following the tips above, you will be able to make the most of your solo travel adventure.

Bon voyage! You are well on your way to creating memories that will last a lifetime.
